What makes Détour different from traditional dating apps?
Traditional dating apps rely on static profiles and endless swiping. Détour shifts dating into the participation era: you discover people nearby through real-time moments ("Vibes"), video clips, and local activities. Opening lines start from context, not awkward cold intros.
Is Détour free to download and use?
Yes! Détour is free to download and use. You can set up your profile, post Vibes, discover nearby users, send match requests, and chat with mutual connections at no cost.
Who is eligible to join Détour?
Détour is strictly for adults aged 18 and older. We enforce date-of-birth verification and selfie verification tools during onboarding to maintain an 18+ community. For full details, view our Child Safety Standards.
How do I set up a compelling profile?
Download the app, verify your phone number via SMS OTP, add your name and DOB, upload clear profile photos, answer a few Icebreaker prompts, and post your first Vibe to show what you're up to today!
2. Location & Privacy Safeguards
How does real-time location work on Détour?
Détour uses your mobile device's GPS while the app is active to surface Vibes posted near you and calculate distance between users. This makes local discovery relevant and immediate.
Can other users see my exact GPS address or map location?
NO. Never. We intentionally obfuscate exact GPS coordinates to protect your safety. Other users only see that you are within a general distance radius or neighborhood context (e.g., "2 miles away"), never your exact address or live movement path.
Can I turn off location permissions?
Yes, you can toggle location permissions in your mobile device settings (iOS or Android) at any time. If disabled, local discovery will reflect your last known general area or allow manual neighborhood selection.
3. Vibes, Match Requests & Context-First Chat
What is a "Vibe"?
A Vibe is a photo, short video clip, or caption you share to show a real moment in your day—whether you're trying a new coffee shop, at a concert, or exploring a local park. Vibes give nearby users a natural reason to respond.
Why can't I message someone immediately?
Détour is built on consent and mutual interest. Direct messaging only opens when a user accepts your Vibe response or Match Request. This prevents unwanted inbox spam and ensures every conversation starts with mutual consent.
How long do Vibes stay active?
Vibes are temporary moments that automatically expire after a set time limit (e.g., 24 hours) to keep local feeds current and spontaneous.
What is Arlene, and does it auto-send messages?
Arlene is an optional AI communication assistant built into Détour to help draft conversation openers or suggest profile improvements. Arlene never auto-sends messages; you remain in total control of everything you send.
4. Safety, Account & Support
How do I report harassment or inappropriate behavior?
Tap the options menu (...) on any profile, Vibe post, or chat screen and select "Report". Our safety team reviews reports around the clock. Urgent concerns can also be emailed directly to support@joindetour.me.
How do I permanently delete my account and data?
You can delete your account inside the app via Profile → Settings → Account → Delete Account, or email support@joindetour.me with subject line "Delete my account". For details, visit our Account Deletion Page.
How do I submit feedback, feature ideas, or bug reports?
We read every submission! You can submit ideas, report glitches, or request new features directly via our Feedback Page or through our Help Center.
